This is the Secret Behind Human Eyes.

No matter how similar a doll's face is to a human's, people can still tell the difference. Scientists discovered that eyes make faces appear alive, distinguishing between living and nonliving things.

A study appearing in the journal Psychological Science found that a face must closely resemble a human face in order to live, and the key is especially in the eyes. Several film artists have tried to make human animations, but failed to "turn it on". For example, the animated character in the film Polar Express, which makes people uncomfortable watching the film because it lacks life.

"There's something really, really important about seeing a face and knowing that there's life in it," said Thalia Wheatley of Dartmouth College, Hanover, United States, who carried out the research with Christine Looser. Humans can see faces in various objects—the moon, a piece of toast, two dots, and a line for a nose—but that's not enough to decide whether an object is alive or not.

Wheatley and Looser knew which part of the face looked alive. More loosely going to all the doll shops in New Hampshire and doll faces. The photo of each doll's face is compared to a similar human face. Looser uses morphing software to combine them, resulting in an image of a doll and a human.

Volunteers were asked to choose which picture was a human and which one was a doll. In that experiment, Looser and Wheatley found that the eyes are the most important feature for determining whether a face is "alive" or not. "I think we're all looking for relationships with other people," Wheatley said. "When we recognize that there is life in a face, we think, 'This is a thought I can call'."
